March 1994 at Club Lingerie, February 10 Watching the Cherry Poppin' Daddies is like putting a musical blender on high speed and throwing in everything but the kitching sink. Sit back, consume and let your head explode. How else can you describe a band that combines swing, disco, hip hop, jazz and funk? An eight-piece band complete with horns and keyboards, they combine so much into a hyperactive musical frenzy that somehow it all works. Frontman Steve Perry is a serious spaz on stage. Not only can he belt out a mean croon but visucally, he is an animated whirling dervish. I'm truly convinced he must be a madman. If he wasn't fronting a band, he would probably be on a street corner somewhere talking to himself. One of the true strong points of this band is the super tight three-piece horn section whose trumpet player, Dana Heitman, is great fun to watch as he twirls his trumpet like a manic drum major between his two straightmen. Their best moments are those that swing, such as "Ding Dong Daddy" off their upcoming CD out in March. Another favorite of the set was "Teenage Brainsurgeon." Their obvious seventies influences from disco up to the original hip hop sound are a true crack up. Even if you hate that type of music you can't help but admire the way they put it all together. Breaking out of Eugene, Oregon, who knew a place like that would spawn such musical talent, diversity and fun. Coming through L.A. every few months they are a must see to be believe! -Kastle
