Band's name is crude
Editorial from The Register Guard
September 2000

Andy Telford (letters, Sept. 23) advised Tim Baxter (letters, Sept. 22) "to get a life" because Baxter called The Cherry-Poppin' Daddies band name what it is: a name that portrays the rape of little girls by their fathers.

Initially, I was somewhat appeased when The Register-Guard referred to the band as "The Daddies." The abbreviation acknowledged the crudity of the name. It also reminded me that years ago, the band agreed to be called "The Daddies" after a number of local women objected.

Apparently, having achieved fame and fortune, the band doesn't feel the need to honor its local commitments.

Perhaps Telford would like to tell me to get a life, too. Actually, I have a life. Part of my life is my work as a child protection worker. I try to protect little girls from "cherry-poppin' daddies." So to me, the name is not harmless. There is nothing harmless about incest. I wonder if people would find it equally harmless if Eugene had a band called the "Hangin' Rednecks" or the "Gay-Bashin' Bigots."

The name is not harmless, and it brings shame to our community.
