1999(?)
At the forefront of the neo-swing movement championed by bands like the Squirrel Nut Zippers and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, the Cherry Poppin' Daddies were swingin' way before Swingers made it hep. A garage rocker whose life changed when his mom gave him a copy of the Smithsonian Collection of Classic Jazz, vocalist Steve Perry founded the eight-piece combo in 1989 in Eugene, Oregon. With the Cherry Poppin' Daddies' 1997 release, Zoot Suit Riot: The Swingin' Hits of the Cherry Poppin' Daddies, being compared to the big-band swing of Duke Ellington and the blues-jump of Louis Prima, we thought it would be cool to find out what makes Perry flip!
